We can all feel a bit low from time to time but recently while suffering from a strange virus I found myself very flat and very low… luckily this only lasted a few days but it led me to think about people with depression and how terrible it must be to feel that way often and for days or weeks at a time. The universe in her infinite wisdom then sent me a client who seems to have suffered from depression almost all their life! This got me researching into depression, it’s causes and the best ways to escape it’s snarly grip.

Depression can be caused by childhood experiences, learnt reactions, trauma at any age or negative situations such as loss, divorce or redundancy. What ever the cause the outcome is the same – a broken spirit. This broken spirit describes the result of depression well. But how do we repair this broken spirit? This is what I have been working on recently and from my research I have come up with 7 Keys to unlocking depression without medication. These 7 Keys work great for anyone as a healthy and vital way to live life. Please let me know your comments and if you have found this post helpful.

7 Keys To Unlocking Depression Without Medication

  1. Exercise

At least 20 minutes outside every day, walking, running, cycling, yoga.

2. Drink at least 2 litres of water a day

Drinking clean filtered water flushes toxins from our bodies and keeps our organs working and our skin hydrated.

3. Eat Healthily

Basically cut out foods that are processed and contain lots of ingredients. Sugar, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, artificial sweeteners, these are the top culprits to cut out or at least radically cut down. Eat veg, preferably organic, quinoa, organic meat, a bit of fruit and if you have a sweet tooth try medjool dates with a bit of tahini in the middle. Get your self a good healthy cookbook like Deliously Ella by Ella Woodward and cook for yourself from scratch, it is fun and a great hobby.

4. Read as much self development as you can get your hands on

Find self development books that catch your eye or that you seem drawn to, there are so many to chose from you will never be stuck for choice. I recommend anything by Wayne Dyer, Mike Dooley or Louise Hay.

5. Learn the art of meditation

Yes, meditation is an art! The reason being that you really do have to learn to meditate you can’t generally just sit down and meditate for 20 mins, most people start with 1 or 2 minutes and work there way up or start with guided meditations. Headspace is a good site and App.

6. Interact and Connect

Yes believe it or not there isn’t just you in this world! There are nearly 7 Billion of us humans on the planet so it’s not surprising that one of our basic needs is connection. Make sure you interact with people everyday, make conversation in a shop, ring someone for a chat, talk to family.

7. Forgiveness

This is a biggie! Humans tend to hold on to grudges and resentment which causes bitterness and dis-ease within our selves. Learn to let it go and see it from a different perspective. When you chose not to forgive the person you harm the most is yourself. Let it go, forgive everyone and anyone you need to. Never store resentment as it literally eats away at our insides causing terrible illness.

Take each key step by step. Start with exercise and add another one each week until you are in the habit of all 7.

If you find it a bit difficult find a coach to help and support you.

Much love and light,
